* Metric Definition and Relevance: The Band-Tailed pigeon is a species of tribal value to California indigenous peoples and has been identified as a focal species for the SNV RRK project. This metric identifies the current distribution and abundance of suitable habitat for band-tailed pigeons.  

* Creation Method: This distribution map was created by identifying pixels which contained moderate and high value habitat for band-tailed pigeons in two categories of life history; reproduction, and feeding within habitat types where they are found. This is based on the ratings for habitat values found in the California Wildlife Habitat Relationships model managed by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.The combined (reproduction and feeding) suitable habitat layer has been further refined and clipped to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service species range extent. Habitat which meets the following criteria is considered suitable:

  * Suitable vegetation types: WHRTYPE = BOP, BOW, MHW, MHC, MRI, SMC, VOW, WFR
  * Suitable high-quality habitat size/density classes by type: 
    * BOP = 5M, 5D
    * BOW = 5M, 5D
    * MHW = 4M, 4D, 5P, 5M, 5D
    * MHC = 4M, 4D, 5S, 5P, 5M, 5D
    * MRI = 4M, 4D, 5S, 5P, 5M, 5D
    * SMC = 4M, 4D, 5S, 5P, 5M, 5D, 6
    * WFR = 4M, 4D, 5S, 5P, 5M, 5D, 6
